Stocks opened higher on Tuesday as bargain hunters bought recently beaten-down shares at relatively attractive prices, though trading remained cautious amid concerns about the impact of the latest fuel price hike on the macro economy.
Many investors also remained cautious ahead of earnings and dividend declarations, market operators said.
The benchmark DSEX index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) gained 11 points, or 0.21 per cent, to 5,456 by 11:00am when the report was filed.
The blue-chip DS30 index advanced 2 points to 2,082, while the DSES index, which tracks Shariah-compliant stocks, gained 4 points to 1,083.
Market breadth remained positive, with 175 issues advancing, compared with 127 declining and 85 remaining unchanged on the DSE.
Turnover stood at Tk 1.72 billion in the first hour of trading, suggesting continued caution among investors.
Paramount Textile topped the turnover chart, with shares worth Tk 96 million changing hands during the period.
The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also opened higher. Its All Share Price Index (CASPI) gained 36 points to 14,657, while the CSE Selective Categories Index (CSCX) rose 22 points to 8,994.
