Stocks open higher as revised margin rules gazette published

Stocks opened higher on Tuesday, rebounding from a four-session losing streak, as investors stepped up buying of fundamentally strong and selective shares following the publication of the revised margin rules.

The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) published the gazette of the Margin Rules, 2025 on Monday night, incorporating changes to some provisions. Market insiders said the revised rules appeared more market-friendly and helped ease uncertainty that had weighed on investor sentiment in recent sessions.

Against this backdrop, the benchmark DSEX index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) gained 45 points, or 0.78 per cent, to reach 5,859 at 11:00 am, when the report was filed.

The DS30 index, comprising blue-chip stocks, advanced 8 points to 2,183, while the Shariah-based DSES index rose 8 points to 1,165.

Trading activity also remained buoyant, with turnover on the premier bourse reaching Tk 2.43 billion during the first hour of trading.

Market breadth was strongly positive, with 325 issues advancing against only 29 declining, while 32 remained unchanged, reflecting broad-based buying interest.

Envoy Textiles emerged as the most-traded issue, with shares worth Tk 162 million changing hands during the first hour.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also opened higher. Its All Share Price Index (CASPI) gained 10 points to 15,634, while the CSE Selective Categories Index (CSCX) rose 13 points to 9,532 at 11:00 am.
