Infographic: TBS

The total market capitalisation of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) crossed the Tk7 lakh crore mark today (6 July) for the first time in more than three months, signalling a continued recovery in investor confidence amid sustained gains in the country’s stock market.

The market capitalisation of the country’s premier bourse rose to over Tk7 lakh crore, the highest level since 16 March, when it stood at Tk7.06 lakh crore. The milestone comes as the benchmark DSEX index has extended its recent rally, supported by expectations of market-friendly regulatory reforms and a series of policy initiatives aimed at strengthening the capital market, according to analysts.

They said reclaiming the Tk7 lakh crore threshold carries strong psychological significance, reflecting a rebound in the overall value of listed companies as investors continue to accumulate fundamentally strong blue-chip and large-cap stocks after a prolonged bearish spell.

The DSEX advanced 12 points, or 0.22%, to close at 5,799 today, hovering just below the key 5,800-point resistance level. The blue-chip DS30 index also edged up one point to settle at 2,192.

Market breadth remained slightly positive, with 166 issues advancing, 155 declining and 71 remaining unchanged.

Despite the gains, trading activity moderated. Daily turnover declined 7% to Tk1,416 crore from the previous session, indicating some investors opted to book profits following the market’s recent rally.

According to Sheltech Brokerage Limited’s daily market review, selective buying in heavyweight and fundamentally strong stocks continued to drive the market higher.

The brokerage said optimism over recent policy measures aimed at deepening the capital market and improving transparency supported investor sentiment. Although profit-taking emerged midway through the trading session, sustained buying interest in selected large-cap stocks outweighed the selling pressure, allowing the benchmark index to extend its winning streak.

Sector-wise, the textile sector accounted for the largest share of turnover at 16.8%, followed by insurance at 12.67% and pharmaceuticals at 12.17%.

An analysis by BRAC EPL Stock Brokerage showed that most major sectors ended in positive territory. The fuel and power sector led the gains, rising 1.08%, followed by telecommunications, which added 0.63%, and food and allied, up 0.57%.

The non-bank financial institution (NBFI) sector was the day’s worst performer, slipping 0.25% as investors remained cautious over the sector’s ongoing liquidity concerns.

The positive momentum also extended to the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE). The Selective Categories’ Index (CSCX) climbed 42 points to 9,488, while the All Share Price Index (CASPI) gained 73 points to close at 15,489. However, turnover at the port city bourse plunged 75% to Tk16.59 crore.

Logo of Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC). Photo: Collected

The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) has restored the authority of the country’s two stock exchanges to independently set circuit breakers and other key trading parameters, reversing a 2021 directive that centralised those powers under the regulator.

The decision was taken at an emergency commission meeting chaired by BSEC Chairman Masud Khan today (1 July).

Under the new directive, the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) will be able to independently determine trading control measures, including circuit breakers, tick size, market lot, block size, order size, closing price calculations, market protection percentages and index calculation frequency.

The exchanges must immediately notify the BSEC of any changes and ensure the information is properly communicated to market participants.

The commission also repealed its 17 June 2021 order that had transferred these operational powers from the bourses to the regulator.

BSEC spokesperson Abul Kalam told TBS that the decision is part of the commission’s broader deregulation initiative.

He said the regulator had previously exercised these powers through various directives despite the exchanges originally having the authority. With the latest decision, the BSEC will no longer intervene in setting circuit breakers and other trading parameters.

To ensure a smooth transition, he said, the existing trading limits will remain in force until the exchanges formally approve and implement new rules.

Dhaka Stock Exchange Managing Director Nuzhat Anwar confirmed that no immediate changes would be made to the current circuit breaker system.

She said any future revisions would first be reviewed and approved by the DSE board before being implemented. As a result, trading today will continue under the existing price movement limits to maintain market stability.

Under the current framework, securities priced up to Tk200 can move by up to 10% a day, while those priced between Tk200 and Tk500 have an 8.75% limit. The allowable price movement gradually declines with higher-priced shares, reaching 3.75% for securities trading above Tk5,000.

Separately, the BSEC decided to relax dividend distribution requirements for open-ended mutual funds, allowing them to retain and reinvest earnings instead of distributing them as dividends if trustees approve proposals from asset managers in the interests of investors and the market.

At present, open-ended mutual funds are required to distribute at least 70% of profits under fixed-income schemes, 30% under growth schemes and 50% under other schemes.

Abul Kalam said the move would benefit investors because cash dividends are subject to a 15% tax, whereas gains realised through unit redemption are not. Retaining earnings would also increase the asset base of the funds, potentially generating higher long-term returns for investors.

Infographic: TBS

The country’s stock market extended its winning streak for a fifth consecutive trading session today (29 June), with late-session buying helping the benchmark index finish in positive territory despite experiencing volatility for most of the day.

The rally, which began on 23 June, has lifted the benchmark DSEX index by a cumulative 168 points over the past five trading sessions, signalling a gradual improvement in investor sentiment after weeks of subdued market activity.

At the close, the benchmark DSEX gained nearly 3 points to settle at 5,723. The DSES Shariah Index slipped 0.23 points to 1,157, while the blue-chip DS30 Index advanced 4 points to close at 2,166.

Turnover, however, eased slightly. Total transactions on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) stood at Tk1,351.52 crore, down 1.42% from the previous trading session. Despite the lower turnover, the DSE’s market capitalisation rose by Tk874 crore to Tk6.97 lakh crore.

Market breadth remained positive. Of the 399 issues traded, 178 advanced, 158 declined and 63 remained unchanged.

Market participants said the session began with mild selling pressure as investors booked profits following the market’s recent gains. The benchmark index remained volatile through the middle of the session as buying and selling pressure balanced each other. However, renewed buying interest emerged during the final trading hour across several sectors, allowing the market to close higher.

Among the day’s top gainers, Rahim Textile climbed 8.73% to Tk225.30 per share. JMI Syringes & Medical Devices rose 7.43%, followed by IPDC Finance, which gained 6.55%. CAPM IBBL Islamic Mutual Fund advanced 6.18%, while Indo-Bangla Pharmaceuticals added 6.02%.

On the losing side, People’s Leasing and Financial Services dropped 7.63% to Tk1.20 per share. Other major losers included BD Thai Aluminium, SS Steel, Familytex (BD) and Saif Powertec.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also experienced a mixed session. The CSCX Selective Categories Index edged up 0.8 point, while the benchmark CASPI (All Share Price Index) slipped 2.3 points at the close. Trading activity at the port city bourse remained significantly lower than that of the DSE.

In its daily market review, EBL Securities said the benchmark index managed to settle in positive territory after a modest early-session pullback, as late-session buying support emerged across the trading board following extended intraday volatility.

According to the brokerage, investors remained active on both the buying and selling sides throughout the day. While corrections in several large-cap stocks weighed on the indices during most of the session, renewed buying interest in the final hour helped the market recover and end with modest gains.

Sector-wise, the banking sector dominated turnover, accounting for 12.8% of the day’s total transactions. The textile sector followed with a 12.6% share, while the general insurance sector contributed 12.4%.

Sectoral performance was mixed. The jute sector posted the strongest gain, rising 2.1%, followed by information technology, which advanced 1.2%, and general insurance, up 1.1%. On the downside, the ceramics sector fell 1.2%, making it the day’s worst performer, followed by the services sector, which lost 0.8%, and the miscellaneous sector, down 0.5%.

BRAC EPL Stock Brokerage also reported mixed performances among the large-cap sectors. Fuel and power led the gainers with a 0.37% increase, followed by non-bank financial institutions (0.20%), telecommunications (0.18%) and engineering (0.07%). In contrast, the food and allied sector declined 0.37%, pharmaceuticals lost 0.26%, and banking fell 0.23%.

Meanwhile, block trades accounted for 5.5% of the day’s total market turnover.

Shares jumped 18% after trading resumed following strong nine-month profits and filings release

Beximco Pharmaceuticals PLC’s Global Depositary Receipts (GDRs) resumed trading on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) on Friday after a nearly six-month suspension, allowing the company to narrowly avoid automatic delisting.

Trading was suspended on 2 January after the company failed to publish its audited financial statements for the year ended 30 June 2025 and subsequent quarterly reports.

Under LSE rules, securities suspended for six months are automatically delisted. Beximco Pharma published the overdue reports on 23 June, days before the 2 July deadline, restoring compliance. The market responded positively, with the GDRs surging 18% to close at 50 pence.

Infographic: TBS

Regulatory intervention

The resumption followed coordination between the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), Beximco Pharma and the DSE Brokers Association (DBA).

After foreign investors urged the regulator to prevent a delisting, the BSEC granted special approval for the board to approve the overdue audited accounts for FY25 and the first three quarterly reports of FY26.

The DBA said the move safeguarded foreign investors and Bangladesh’s credibility in global capital markets.

Governance deadlock

The reporting delay stemmed from a governance dispute following the arrest of Vice Chairman Salman F Rahman in August 2024.

The BSEC subsequently appointed nine independent directors to Beximco Group companies. Beximco Pharma challenged the appointments in the High Court and barred the directors from joining while the case remained pending, leaving the board unable to approve financial statements until the regulator granted the waiver.

Profit jumps despite wider group woes

Despite the governance impasse, Beximco Pharma reported robust earnings.

Consolidated net profit rose 34% year-on-year to Tk704 crore in the first nine months (July-March) of FY26, driven by higher sales, lower financing costs and stronger interest income. Revenue increased 13% to Tk4,142 crore, while nine-month profit surpassed earnings for the entire previous fiscal year.

The financial statements also underscored the broader Beximco Group’s difficulties. While the pharmaceutical business remains cash-generative, Beximco Limited faces a severe liquidity crunch that has halted operations and strained debt servicing, raising the risk of default on bank loans and Sukuk obligations.

The company has recommended a 47.5% cash dividend for FY25. The annual general meeting will be scheduled in line with High Court directives, while 2 August has been fixed as the record date for dividend eligibility.

The World Bank Board of Executive Directors has approved $450 million in financing to help Bangladesh strengthen the foundations of a stronger banking sector, a prerequisite for reviving the country’s economic growth and job creation.

The financing, under the Financial Sector Support Project II, aims to strengthen the deposit protection system to safeguard small depositors and build Bangladesh Bank’s supervisory capacity and systems, according to a World Bank press release issued today (24 June).

The project will also lay the groundwork for bank resolution and reforms in state-owned banks.

Infpgraphics: TBS

It will support the deposit protection fund by increasing its capital and advancing key reform priorities, including enhancing the deposit protection system, establishing an effective Emergency Liquidity Assistance framework, developing bank restructuring strategies, and supporting reforms in state-owned banks.

Bangladesh’s banking sector faces significant challenges caused by weak corporate governance, regulatory capture and related-party lending.

The non-performing loan (NPL) ratio stood at 32.6% as of the end of March 2026, well above the 7.9% average for South Asian banks, while the system-wide capital-to-risk-weighted assets ratio was negative 2.6% as of the end of December 2025.

“Bangladesh’s vision of attaining a trillion-dollar economy requires a stable and inclusive financial sector. But the banking sector – which accounts for about 90% of total financial sector assets – faces mounting stress,” said Jean Pesme, World Bank Division Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan.

“This project will help Bangladesh put in place a set of essential tools, systems, and safeguards needed to protect small depositors and support confidence, restore stability in the banking sector, and allow it to support economic growth and job creation,” he said.

The project will upgrade and modernise Bangladesh Bank’s ICT infrastructure, helping address rising cybersecurity risks and close critical gaps in sector-wide data and analytics.

This will improve the central bank’s ability to monitor risks, enhance data-driven and risk-based supervision, and strengthen the resilience of the financial sector.

“The project, which forms part of a coordinated approach by development partners including the IMF and the Asian Development Bank, supports measures to bolster crisis preparedness and build the authorities’ capacity to manage banking sector stress,” said Toshiaki Ono, World Bank Senior Financial Sector Specialist and Task Team Leader of the project.

During the fiscal year, its consolidated net profit stood at Tk699.88 crore, which was Tk586.67 crore.

To approve the audited financial statement and the dividend the company will set the annual general meeting time and venue following the High Court order. It also set the record date for 2 August.

Besides, the company reported that its consolidated net profit stood at Tk704 crore in the first nine months of FY26.

Earlier, the regulator had permitted the Beximco Pharma to hold a special board meeting to approve and publish its five overdue quarterly financial statements, mitigating the looming risk of a delisting from the London Stock Exchange (LSE).

The trading of Beximco Pharma remained temporarily suspended on London’s Alternative Investment Market (AIM) from 2 January 2026, as it failed to publish its annual financial results within the stipulated time frame.

Amid rising concerns raised by foreign institutional investors to the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), the regulator has permitted Beximco Pharmaceuticals to hold a board of directors meeting.

During the interim government, the BSEC appointed nine independent directors to the board of Beximco Pharma, as well as to two other listed group entities: Beximco Ltd and Shinepukur Ceramics.

Beximco Pharma legally challenged the regulator’s decision by filing a writ petition, which remains pending in court. Citing the matter as sub-judice, the company has not allowed the BSEC-appointed independent directors to take their seats on the board.

According to DSE data, the stock has been on a steady rise in recent sessions, reflecting strong investor interest and increased trading activity.

Shares of Beximco Pharmaceuticals have continued their upward trajectory on the stock market, gaining nearly 16% over the last six trading sessions. The pharmaceutical company also emerged as the most traded stock on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) on the first trading day of the week.

Shares worth Tk50.78 crore of Beximco Pharmaceuticals changed hands yesterday on the DSE, the highest turnover recorded among all listed securities for the day. The share price rose 2.54% to Tk145.30 on the DSE today (21 June).

According to DSE data, the stock has been on a steady rise in recent sessions, reflecting strong investor interest and increased trading activity.

Market participants say Beximco Pharmaceuticals is widely regarded as one of the most fundamentally sound companies within the Beximco Group. Growing investor confidence in the stock has contributed to the rise in both its share price and trading volume.

However, uncertainty surrounding the company’s financial disclosures continues to cast a shadow over the rally. Beximco Pharma is yet to publish its audited annual financial statements for FY2025. The company has attributed the delay to legal complications related to the restructuring of its board of directors, which has prevented the approval and publication of the audited accounts.

Meanwhile, the company’s Global Depositary Receipts (GDRs), listed on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) of the London Stock Exchange, have remained suspended since 2 January this year. The suspension was imposed after the company failed to publish its audited annual report for the year ended 30 June 2025 within the required deadline.

The company has stated that it has been unable to approve its audited financial results because its board of directors has not been able to convene. A board meeting is mandatory for approving financial statements, but the dispute over the appointment of additional independent directors remains pending before the court, preventing the board from meeting.

Against this backdrop, six institutional investors holding the company’s London-listed securities recently wrote to the Chairman of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), urging the regulator to take the necessary steps to facilitate the approval and publication of the company’s financial statements. According to the investors, the prolonged absence of financial disclosures has left them without a clear picture of the company’s actual financial condition.

In 2024, following directives from the Ministry of Finance, BSEC appointed nine independent directors to the board of Beximco Pharmaceuticals. The company subsequently challenged the decision by filing a writ petition with the High Court. The matter has remained under judicial review since then, effectively stalling board activities and preventing the publication of quarterly and annual financial reports.

No hearing has yet been held on the writ petition. According to legal sources, the matter is likely to come up for hearing later this week.

BSEC officials maintain that the pending court case over board restructuring does not prevent the existing board from approving the company’s financial statements. In their view, the company could move forward with the approval process without requiring any special intervention from the regulator. By choosing to await a court ruling instead, however, the company has prolonged the uncertainty surrounding its financial reporting obligations.

The Appellate Division’s Chamber Court has vacated a High Court status quo order, clearing the path for the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) to proceed with enforcement actions against Best Holdings PLC regarding alleged misconduct in its bond-to-equity conversion.

The order was passed today (17 June) by Justice Farah Mahbub’s Chamber Court following an application by the BSEC.

According to lawyers of BSEC involved in the matter, the regulator can now take action on its inquiry report concerning the company’s conversion of corporate bonds into equity shares, which were allotted to major state-owned banks and private mutual funds.

The investigation centres on the “BHL 25% Convertible Secured Bond,” a Tk1,200 crore instrument issued by Best Holdings in 2019. The bond was intended to refinance high-cost syndicated loans taken for its flagship luxury hotel, Le Méridien Dhaka.

Allegations of misconduct surfaced after the company issued 7.69 crore shares each to Sonali Bank, Agrani Bank, and Janata Bank, alongside 4.61 crore shares to Rupali Bank. Furthermore, 3.67 crore shares were allotted to ten mutual funds managed by RACE Asset Management. These shares were issued at a significant premium over the Tk10 face value just before the company’s Initial Public Offering (IPO).

Previously, Sentinel Trustee and Custodial Services Limited, the BSEC-approved trustee involved in the conversion process, filed a writ petition before the High Court and secured a stay order on the BSEC’s enforcement work. However, the BSEC moved the Chamber Court to lift this restriction.

In May, the BSEC has launched a special audit into Best Holdings to examine how it utilised funds raised through various public and private channels.

The move aims to ensure compliance with securities regulations governing the deployment of capital raised via the company’s Initial Public Offering (IPO), corporate bonds and private placements

Turnover increases 7% to Tk1,456 crore, indicating stronger liquidity.

The country’s premier stock exchange extended its upward momentum for a third consecutive session yesterday, with the benchmark index climbing to a nine-and-a-half-month high, driven by strong buying in blue-chip stocks and a sharp rally in Islami Bank.

Despite late-session profit-taking pressure that saw more than half of traded issues decline, the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) managed to stay resilient above the 5,600-point mark, supported by selective accumulation in large-cap shares.

The DSEX rose 15 points, or 0.27%, to settle at 5,640, its highest level since late last year. The DS30 index also edged up by 8 points to close at 2,128, reflecting broadly positive sentiment among blue-chip counters.

However, market breadth remained negative, underscoring cautious trading activity, as 184 issues declined against 145 advances, while 66 remained unchanged.

Total turnover increased by 7% to Tk1,456 crore, indicating improved liquidity flow and sustained investor participation.

According to EBL Securities, the market showed notable resilience as investors continued accumulating attractively valued blue-chip stocks. A key driver of the session was sustained buying pressure in Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC, which surged 10% to hit the upper circuit breaker.

Market insiders attributed the rally to expectations of government-backed regulatory support aimed at easing the bank’s liquidity stress, which helped restore investor confidence in the stock.

Despite strong momentum during mid-session trading, many investors opted to book profits after the index reached a multi-month peak, leading to mixed sentiment toward the close.

Sheltech Brokerage Limited noted that the day’s movement was shaped by a combination of selective accumulation and profit-taking pressure. Although the session opened with broad-based buying interest, selling pressure intensified from mid-session onward. However, support from the banking and large-cap pharmaceutical sectors helped absorb losses and ensured a positive finish for the key indices.

On the sectoral front, general insurance dominated turnover, accounting for 15.9% of total trade, followed by the banking sector with 13.3% and textiles with 10.1%.

In terms of performance, the ceramic sector led the gainers with a 1.9% rise, followed by banking at 1.2% and cement at 0.9%.

On the losing side, the miscellaneous sector declined 3.9%, while life insurance and general insurance dropped 3.1% and 1.1%, respectively.

Islami Bank topped the gainers’ list, followed by Sonargaon Textile, Emerald Oil, and Meghna Condensed Milk.

On turnover, IPDC Finance was the most traded stock with Tk81 crore, followed by NCC Bank and Beximco Pharmaceuticals.

Beximco Limited emerged as the top loser, falling 9.95%, followed by ICB Employees Provident Mutual Fund and Shyampur Sugar.

The positive momentum was also reflected on the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), where the CSCX index rose 12 points to 9,423, while the CASPI gained 52 points to reach 15,395. Turnover at the port city bourse surged 75% to Tk42.46 crore.
